Last night, my husband, Gary, and I had the privilege to attend an advanced screening of the upcoming movie “What to Expect When You’re Expecting.” The movie follows the lives of five couples experiencing the joys, trials and tribulations of the journey that is pregnancy and parenthood. The movie is based on the best-selling book “What to Expect When You’re Expecting.” It features a star-studded cast including such well-known names as Jennifer Lopez, Cameron Diaz, Anna Kendrick, Chace Crawford, Chris Rock and Dennis Quaid among many others.

I’ll be honest. I was a bit skeptical and a little nervous about how the movie would capture this special time in a couple’s lives. Having a baby is a life-altering event. Everything changes when a baby enters the picture, even before the baby is born. A woman’s body goes through so many amazing and sometimes scary changes during pregnancy. Many of these changes, especially some of the hormonal ones and the aches and pains associated with pregnancy, often come as a surprise to many women! Plus, there is already so much judgment, stigma and sometimes guilt associated with pregnancy, delivery and everything that comes afterward. For more than a decade I have personally witnessed thousands of moms who are going or have gone through this process and the emotional roller coaster that comes with it. There is a lot of joy in having a baby, but for many moms it can also be incredibly hard.

I found the movie to be much better than anticipated. “What to Expect” is very funny and, in my opinion, the director and actors did a superb job in pertaining to the truth and reality of childbearing. They were able to focus on the serious aspects as well as throw in some comedic scenes! Dads can also get just as much from the movie as moms. The movie is well-balanced and shows how the dads and dads-to-be are facing the same or similar fears and joys as the women. It shows that men are as big a part of parenthood as women.
