American Heart Association
Heart disease and stroke are the number 1 and number 5 killers of both men and women in the United States. In 1924, the American Heart Association was founded by six cardiologists who were determined to conduct scientific research to discover the causes of heart disease. Since that time, the American Heart Association meets every year and is the largest annual cardiovascular meeting in the United States.
Some of the breakthroughs the American Heart Association has funded to prevent heart disease:
- Used the first external defibrillator to return a quivering heart back to a steady rhythm in a human
- Implanted the first pacemaker
- Performed the first successful artificial heart valve replacement that is still being used today
- Showed how CPR can save lives after cardiac arrest and that chest compressions for CPR without mouth-to-mouth can be done to keep blood circulating to vital organs
- Pioneered microsurgery for advancing artery surgery, neurosurgery and numerous other procedures
- Helped the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Acts pass, which lets the FDA regulate tobacco, bans candy-flavored cigarettes, and adds large warning labels to tobacco products
- Lead heart disease and stroke research funding
Shop with Heart Card
Shop with Heart card raises funds that go toward research, education, and community programs right here in Houston. 100% of the proceeds go directly to the American Heart Association’s mission to build healthier lives free of cardiovascular disease and stroke. Between April 26 and May 5, Shop with Heart card can be purchased at Motherhood Center for $50.
