The days are shorter, pumpkins are out, Fall Festivals are in full swing and people are venturing out for walks …it’s Fall in Houston! Well … sort of. Houston really seems to have two seasons: Summer and Winter. When the temperature barely drops into the 60s, many Houstonians bring out the boots and scarves to at least give the impression that colder weather is coming. Everyone is waiting with anticipation for that first real cold front that ushers in Houston’s second season … winter.

While people venture out for the few weeks where we do have temperatures in the 60s and 70s, by the time temperatures dip lower, people often resort to spending more time inside. Don’t forget to continue to go outside even when it becomes cold! Just bundle up to stay warm. The fresh air is good for everyone, even babies, as long as they are snug and warm.

The Fall/Winter season in Houston is very different from where I grew up in the Czech Republic. There we had real seasons and I remember picking acorns and watching the leaves turn vibrant colors.

A friendly reminder: colder weather also brings with it cold and flu season. Make sure to wash your hands (check out Prelude Music Director Ana Trevino-Godfrey’s cute hand washing song) and cough into your elbow instead of your hands to keep germs from spreading. If your infant has a stuffy or runny nose, The Motherhood Center sells the Nose Freida to help clear up the congestion.
