How to Pick a Unique Celebrity Baby Name…or Not?

Celebrities aren’t the only ones who spend a lot of time thinking up unique names for their kids. Unless you’re naming a baby with a “Jr.” at the end, you’re probably wrestling with what baby name to put on that birth certificate too.

Unique Baby Names

Many parents want to come up with a unique or meaningful name. How can you go about doing it? Here are some brainstorming ideas that could help you hit on just the right name for your baby.

  • Look back at the family tree and see if there are any interesting names they can use from the past. Sometimes parents will find that a grandmother’s maiden name or a great-grandfather’s name makes for a great modern baby name.
  • Decide on what you want your child’s name to mean, and work backwards. For example, if you want your baby’s name to mean “strength”, then look up what names are attached to that description.
  • Is there a place that is special to you and/or your spouse? Geographic locations have been trending as baby names. Kanye West and Kim Kardashian named one of their kids “Chicago”.
  • Maybe there are names associated to a religious tradition that you would like to consider.
  • Cultural names, names in other languages, or words related to ethnic/cultural symbols can also be a source of unique baby names.
  • Think back on favorite book characters, artists, athletes, songs, or people you admire in history. Some parents will even name their children after favorite colors!

Popular Baby Names

Maybe you’ve decided celebrity baby names are not for you after all. Although having an original baby name can be fun, there’s nothing wrong with a good old-fashioned standard moniker.

As is the case with many things, there are trends in naming a baby as well. Certain names become very popular and it’s perfectly fine to choose one which will end up a classic. The Social Security Administration publishes a list of Top Names 10 by gender every year. Here are the top baby names of 2019.

What to Avoid When Naming a Baby

Whether you choose a trendy name, an unusual name, a family name, or one picked just as the baby is born, there are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Initials: Be mindful of what the initials will spell out. You definitely want to make sure that whatever names you choose will not make life hard for your child. Maybe you want to name your daughter after your grandmother Alice, and you wanted to honor Russian ancestry with Anastasia as a middle name, but your last name is Smith. Careful there! You probably don’t want to burden your child with those initials!
  • Nicknames: What are some unsavory nicknames that could possibly come from their given name? Kids are not always nice so don’t make it easy for your child to get teased.
  • Notorious Names: Are there any evil characters, fictional or not, with the same name? If your last name is Bates, maybe don’t name your child Norman.
  • Sounds: Say the entire name out loud to see if it sounds right. Sometimes you think you have chosen the perfect combination of names only to realize after hearing it spoken that it sounds clunky or rhymes in a silly way.

It can feel like a lot of pressure to come up with a baby name, but sometimes inspiration can come from unlikely places. In any case, you or your child can always choose a whole different nickname to use so don’t stress about it. Enjoy the process of picking out just the right name for the newest member of your family!
