As your due date approaches, you may find yourself wondering what you can do to help prepare for labor, and how to feel a little more comfortable in those final weeks of pregnancy. To help answer some of the most common questions, we sat down with one of Motherhood Center's massage therapists to learn more about induction massage, what to expect during a session, and how it can fit into your birth preparation journey.
Can induction massage start labor?
One of the first questions moms often have about induction massage is, "Can it actually help get labor started?" And it's a fair question, especially when you're 39 weeks pregnant and more than ready to meet your little one!
Induction massage incorporates targeted acupressure techniques on the back, legs, feet, and hands, alongside pregnancy-appropriate massage. While acupressure is sometimes used as a complementary approach to birth preparation, research has not established that it reliably starts labor. Think of it as an opportunity to support your comfort and relaxation as you approach your due date, rather than a guaranteed way to get contractions going.

What to expect during an induction massage session
During your session, we'll focus on areas where you're carrying tension and make adjustments to help you feel comfortable throughout the massage. By the final weeks of pregnancy, your back, hips, and legs may be feeling the extra work of carrying your growing baby. And if finding a comfortable sleeping position has become a nightly game of musical pillows, you're certainly not alone!
Your comfort is important throughout the session, so don't hesitate to let your therapist know if you'd like to adjust your position or pressure.
A chance to slow down before baby arrives
There's also a lot happening mentally as your due date approaches. Between preparing for birth, checking off those last-minute to-dos, and wondering when your baby will arrive, it's easy to get caught up in the countdown.
A massage gives you some time to slow down while addressing the physical discomforts that can come with late pregnancy. It may help ease muscle tension and encourage relaxation, although everyone's experience is different.

Check with your provider first
Before scheduling, check with your OB-GYN or midwife to make sure massage is appropriate for your pregnancy, particularly if you have complications or specific medical restrictions.
And one last reminder as you get closer to meeting your baby: you don't have to rush the process or put pressure on yourself to make labor happen by a certain date. If you're approaching or past your due date and have questions about when labor might begin, your healthcare provider can help you understand your options.
In the meantime, it's okay to take things one day at a time, listen to your body, and give yourself a little grace during this final stretch.
