Becoming a new dad is an exciting journey, but it also comes with its own set of challenges. From sleepless nights and navigating the demands of a newborn to balancing work and family life, new fathers often find themselves in uncharted territory. Gabriela recently had the opportunity to do a Q&A session with Dr. Alexander Injac, a local pediatrician and proud father of twins. Dr. Injac not only cares for the health and well-being of children but also plays an active role in supporting new dads through his leadership of our New Dad's Meet Up at Motherhood Center. His unique perspective as both a pediatrician and a dad makes him an invaluable resource for new and expectant fathers. In this two-part series, Dr. Injac shares his personal experiences, challenges, and advice. Let's explore the first part of our interview with Dr. Injac, where he discusses how fatherhood has changed him and offers practical advice for new dads.

How has becoming a father changed you as a person?

Becoming a father has refocused my life. It has changed my priorities and overall made me a better, kinder and happier person.

What's the most rewarding aspect of being a father?

Every morning when I see my children and who they are becoming, it brings a smile to my face.   Those tiny but special moments like the time they took the first step, said the first word and made a first friend, fill me with unmeasurable pride and happiness.

What's the biggest challenge you've faced as a father?

Learning how to be patient and at times adjust my expectations for my children has been the biggest challenge.

What's the best parenting advice you've received?

Don’t fuss about small things, and most things are small.

What advice would you give to first-time dads?

Parenthood is the best and hardest thing you will ever do. You are not required to be perfect but always try your best to grow with your children.

What's something you wish you knew before becoming a dad?

Children are individuals. No matter how much you would like to there is only so much you can influence your children’s life.

How do you balance work and family life? / How do you handle work-related travel or long hours away from family?

This is a daily struggle for all working parents. While I cannot be with my children all the time, I try to be present and available, when I am with them and make the most of the time we have together.

How do you maintain a strong relationship with your partner while parenting?

Communication with your partner is another daily struggle, for all parents, married or not. It should be a priority, but in our busy life often falls to the background. Good and open communication between parents is the basis of a healthy relationship and optimal parenting.
