10 Must-Have Items for Your Hospital Bag: A Guide from Motherhood Center
December 10, 2025
Preparing for your baby's arrival is an exciting time, and packing your hospital bag is one of the final steps before you meet your little one. At Motherhood Center, we want to help you feel prepared and confident as you head to the hospital. Here are the 10 essential items every expecting mom should pack for both herself and baby.
For Mom
1. Comfortable Going-Home Outfit
Pack something loose and comfortable that fits like you're six months pregnant. Your body needs time to recover, so think soft fabrics and elastic waistbands. Don't forget comfortable shoes and a cozy robe for walking the hospital halls.
2. Nursing Bras
Whether you plan to breastfeed or not, your milk will come in. Bring 2-3 comfortable nursing bras and disposable or washable breast pads to prevent leaks and keep you comfortable during those first days.
3. Toiletries and Personal Care Items
Hospitals provide basics, but you'll feel more like yourself with your own products. Pack travel-size shampoo, conditioner, body wash, toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, face wash, moisturizer, and lip balm. Don't forget hair ties, a brush, and any makeup you might want for photos. Maybe even bring your own pillow and a soft/comfortable blanket as the hospital ones are not like home.
4. Phone Charger and Entertainment
Labor can be long, and recovery requires rest. Bring your phone charger (with an extra-long cord), headphones, books, magazines, or a tablet loaded with your favorite shows. These will be lifesavers during early labor and those quiet feeding moments.
5. Important Documents and Insurance Information
Pack your ID, insurance cards, hospital pre-registration forms, and birth plan copies. Keep them in a folder that's easily accessible. You might also want to include your pediatrician's contact information.
For Baby
6. Going-Home Outfit (in Multiple Sizes)
Babies come in all sizes, so pack one newborn outfit and one 0-3 month outfit. Include a onesie, pants or sleeper, socks, and a hat. Consider the weather and bring a blanket or bunting if it's cold. Don't forget diapers for the ride home. The hospital will provide diapers — usually a couple extra packs to take home.
7. Properly Installed Car Seat
This is non-negotiable — hospitals won't let you leave without one. Install it before you go into labor and familiarize yourself with how to buckle the baby in safely. Have it inspected by a certified technician if possible.
8. Swaddle Blankets
While hospitals provide blankets, many parents prefer their own soft, familiar swaddles. Bring 2-3 lightweight blankets that can help soothe babies and make them feel secure. Muslin or cotton varieties work beautifully.
9. Pacifiers (If Desired)
If you plan to use pacifiers, bring a few different styles. Some babies are particular about what they'll accept. Keep them in a clean case or bag, and consider having both newborn and 0-3 month sizes available.
10. Baby's First Photo Outfit
Many parents want those precious first family photos. Consider bringing a special outfit or milestone blanket for the baby's first pictures. A simple, neutral outfit or a meaningful piece from your own childhood can make these photos even more special.
Bonus Tips from Motherhood Center
What You Can Leave at Home: Most hospitals provide diapers, wipes, basic baby clothes, receiving blankets, and postpartum supplies for mom. Call ahead to confirm what your hospital stocks so you don't overpack. Pack Early: Have your bag ready by 36 weeks in case the baby arrives early. Keep it by the door with your car seat already installed. Consider Two Bags: Pack one for labor (could include labor tools, fans, or aromatherapy) and leave a second bag in the car with items you might need for an extended stay. Don't Forget Your Partner: They'll need snacks, a change of clothes, toiletries, and their own phone charger too! A sweatshirt is a good idea too — moms are usually hot in labor so the room tends to be chilly. Remember, the most important thing you're bringing to the hospital is yourself and your readiness to meet your baby. Everything else is just extra comfort. Trust your instincts, pack what feels right for you, and know that hospitals are equipped to provide most essentials if you forget something.
