What is Yoga?

Yoga means "union" in Sanskrit and is a practice that dates back 5,000 years to its homeland in India. Hatha Yoga is the most popular type of yoga in the United States today. Its focus is on the physical body rather than the spiritual by focusing on poses/postures (asanas), cleansing techniques (shodhana) and breath control (pranayama). Yoga calms the brain and nervous system, while improving the strength and flexibility of the body, which is why participants usually leave yoga class feeling centered, peaceful and energized.

Pregnancy Exercise Tips & Guidelines

  • Didn't exercise regularly before pregnancy? Don't worry! Start gradually and you can build up to a longer workout and more often throughout the week.
  • Drink plenty of water or electrolyte beverages before and after class to prevent dehydration and overheating.
  • If you are not feeling well for whatever reason, rest in a reclined position with legs elevated.
  • Pay attention to what your body is telling you; there is no need to overwork or overstrain your body.
  • Remember to talk to your doctor before beginning any exercise program.
  • Yoga can improve the quality of your life, allowing you to become more in tune with your body.

For Our Prenatal Yoga Students:

Whether new to yoga or even if you have prior experience, come to class with an open mind. Feel as if this is your first yoga class, and as your body changes over time, this approach will serve you well. As your center of gravity changes and challenges your standing postures, consider using a wall. The goal being how the posture FEELS, not what it looks like and resist making comparisons. Truly be in the moment allowing the posture to suit how you feel. Prenatal Yoga is all about adjusting and improvising providing a perfect fit for everyBODY!
