Prelude – Music Classes for Children 0 to 6 years

Prelude MusicSee Prelude featured on Fox News!

See Prelude featured in Culture Map Houston!

Prelude provides music and movement classes for children from birth through kindergarten who are accompanied by their parents or caregivers. Classes are held on weekday mornings, afternoons and on Saturdays.

Children and their parents experience live classical instrument demonstrations presented by world-class musicians. Families are encouraged to attend class together, so siblings can learn music and movement activities to enjoy at home.

Classes use the Music Together® curriculum, a research based music and movement program. This curriculum develops a child''s basic music competence by encouraging interactive music experiences rather than learning information about music. Up to 12 children and their caregivers meet for 45 minutes each week for 10 weeks to experience new songs, chants, movement activities and play instruments that are developmentally age appropriate. Both adults and children participate. Every family receives two CDs of the music, a song book and parent education materials. Each semester, an evening of parent education is offered to those enrolled in the program.

It is never too early for children to experience the wonder of music and experience making music first hand, states Music Director Ana Trevino-Godfrey. Children, even newborns, gravitate to music instinctively and it is never too late for parents to discover that music appreciation is an evolving life-long skill that they can enjoy for a lifetime with their families. Most of the classes are taught by Ana Trevino-Godfrey, a classically trained professional singer, with her Doctorate of Music at Rice University. She has taught children of all ages from infancy to professional lives, including teaching at Interlochen Arts Camp, the Cleveland Institute of Music, Rice University and Rice University's Preparatory Summer Vocal Camp. In 2007, her love of music and children inspired her to create Prelude Music Classes for Children. She is a registered Music Together teacher and is founding member and Soprano soloist with Mercury Baroque. Some classes taught by Francyne Jacobs, Emily Smith or Debbie Whitmire.

About Music Director Dr. Ana-Trevino-Godfrey:

Music Director Dr. Ana Trevino-Godfrey is a classically trained professional singer. In May of 2009, Ana finished her Doctorate of Music at Rice University. She has taught students of all ages from infancy to professional level, including teaching at Interlochen Arts Camp, The Cleveland Institute of Music, Rice University, and Rice University's Preparatory Summer Vocal Camp. In 2007, her love for music and children inspired her to create Prelude Music Classes for Children. Ana is a certified Music Together® teacher. She is a founding member and Soprano soloist with Mercury Baroque. She is also a music lover, a mother, and a music researcher.

About Instructor Emily Smith:

My name is Emily Lopater Smith, and I have lived in Houston for the past ten years. My husband and I have three children: Henry, Holden, and Louisa. When Henry was a baby, we began the Music Together program, and over four years later, my children and I are still involved and loving it. My musical experience includes lots of singing with my mother as a young child and many years of playing trumpet, part of which I spent in a jazz ensemble. Here in Texas I've been a choir member at First Unitarian Universalist, where I sang alto and occasionally second soprano. I look forward to teaching Music Together because not only do I love music, I also feel that singing with your children is a fundamental part of parenting. And I just love hearing voices together!

About Instructor Francyne Davis Jacobs:

Cantor Francyne Davis Jacobs, MAJMus, MAJEd, was born and raised in Houston, Texas and attended Brandeis University, graduating magna cum laude with Honors in Music and Near Eastern and Judaic Studies in 1995. In 1997, Cantor Davis Jacobs moved to Philadelphia to begin her Cantorial studies at Gratz College. She earned a Master of Arts in Jewish Music (Cantorial degree), with Highest Honors, and served as Valedictorian for the class of 2002 at Gratz College. In 2005, she completed her Master of Arts in Jewish Education, also from Gratz College.

Francyne has been involved in teaching music since 1994. She has taught all ages, from preschool through adults and has directed both youth and adult choirs. She has lectured in numerous settings, including a six week course on the history of Jewish music. Cantor Davis Jacobs’ commitment to Judaism has led her to be involved in Jewish education and music for almost two decades, and she is excited to continue sharing her passion for music with the families of Prelude Music.

Francyne started Prelude Music classes when her daughter, Halle, was 5 months old. Because music is such a prevalent and important part of her own life, Francyne wanted to find a fun, exciting, interesting and researched way to share music with her own children. Halle, and now David (her son), have enjoyed having this special activity to share with their mom, and each child has developed/is developing real musical skills that are more apparent with each passing day. Halle loves coming to music class and seeing her friends, and Francyne hopes to make these kinds of special memories for the families in the classes she teaches.

About Instructor Kasia Montgomery:

Kasia Montgomery is the mom of a preschool boy and toddler girl who have attended Prelude's classes for over three years.  Inspired to become a nurse after a serious childhood illness, she is certified as a family and palliative care nurse practitioner. Kasia was raised in a music lovers' household, attending events at the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra and Eastman School of Music at an early age.  She was a part of the school chorus, high school jazz choir, and high school musical, and can play piano and guitar.  Kasia feels that music has been a supportive partner in all the adventures of life, and is excited to share this passion with other families and their children!
